Combined Defense Service

Purpose

  • The Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit officers into the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and the Officers Training Academy (OTA). The exam is held twice a year, typically in February and November.

Application Process

  • Apply online through the UPSC website (upsc.gov.in).
  • Application fee: ₹200 (Exempted for female/SC/ST/PwBD candidates).

Elgibility Criteria

  • Nationality:

    • Must be an Indian citizen, or a subject of Nepal, Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1962.

  • Age Limit:

    • IMA: 19 to 24 years.
    • INA: 19 to 22 years.
    • AFA: 19 to 23 years.
    • OTA: 19 to 25 years.
  • Physical Standards: Candidates must meet the medical and physical fitness criteria as specified by the respective academies.

Exam Structure

Syllabus

  • Paper I: General Ability and Intelligence

    • General Science: Scientific developments, environmental issues, and technology.

  • Paper II: General Studies, Essay, and Comprehension

    • Essay Writing: Topics on polity, economy, security, and current issues.
    • Comprehension: Reading and answering comprehension-based questions.

Salary and Benefits

  • Starting Salary: Officers joining through CDS are entitled to a starting salary in the range of ₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500 depending on the rank.
  • Allowances: Include Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance (TA), and other perks like medical benefits, canteen facilities, insurance, and pensions.
