Combined Geo-Scientist Exam

Purpose

  • The Combined Geo-Scientist Examination is conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit candidates for posts in the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB).

Application Process

  • Apply online through the UPSC website (upsc.gov.in).
  • Application fee: ₹200 (Exempted for female/SC/ST/PwBD candidates).

Exam Structure

Prelims (Subject-Specific)

  • Geology: Physical Geology, Structural Geology, Paleontology, Stratigraphy, etc.
  • Geophysics: Solid Earth Geophysics, Earthquake Seismology, Electromagnetic Theory, etc.
  • Chemistry: Organic, Inorganic, and Physical Chemistry topics.

Mains

The syllabus for the Mains exam is more detailed and requires in-depth study of:

    • Geology, Geophysics, or Chemistry topics depending on the chosen stream.

    Selection Process

    Preliminary Exam (Objective Type, Online):

    • Paper I: General Studies (100 marks)
    • Paper II: Subject-specific (Geology/Geophysics/Chemistry, 300 marks)
    • Negative marking is applicable.

    Main Exam (Descriptive Type, Offline):

    • Papers are specific to the candidate’s chosen discipline (Geology/Geophysics/Chemistry).

    Personality Test (Interview):

    • Total marks: 200.
