Indian Economical Service and Indian Statistics Service

Purpose

  • The Indian Economic Service (IES) and Indian Statistical Service (ISS) are Group ‘A’ services in the Government of India. The recruitment for these services is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) through a combined examination known as the IES/ISS Examination.

Application Process

  • Apply online through the UPSC website (upsc.gov.in).
  • Application fee: ₹200 (Exempted for female/SC/ST/PwBD candidates).

Elgibility Criteria

  • Eligibility:

    • IES: A postgraduate degree in Economics/Applied Economics/Business Economics/Econometrics from a recognized university.
    • ISS: A bachelor’s degree with Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics as one of the subjects, or a master’s degree in Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics.
  • Age Limit:

    • Minimum: 21 years
    • Maximum: 30 years
    • Age relaxation is applicable for SC/ST, OBC, and other categories as per government norms.

Selection Process

  • 1. Written Examination

    • This is the first stage and consists of 6 papers.
    • The papers are a mix of objective and descriptive questions.
    • The examination is designed to assess candidates’ technical knowledge, general awareness, and English proficiency.
  • 2. Personality Test (Interview)

    • Candidates who clear the written examination are called for the Personality Test, which carries 200 marks.

Salary and Benefits

  • Pay Scale

    • Officers are recruited in the Junior Time Scale of Level 10 in the 7th CPC Pay Matrix.
    • Basic Pay: ₹56,100 per month.
  • Gross Salary

    • Including allowances, the gross monthly salary is typically ₹85,000 to ₹95,000, depending on the posting location.
