All India Judicial Services Exam
Purpose
- The All India Judicial Services (AIJS) Exam is a proposed idea aimed at standardizing and unifying the recruitment process for judicial officers (such as Civil Judges, Magistrates, and other lower court judges) across India. While the concept has been under discussion for several years, it has not yet been implemented. The Law Commission of India, as well as other legal bodies and committees, have recommended such an exam, but challenges related to federalism, autonomy of state judicial systems, and other logistical issues have delayed its introduction.
Application Process
- Candidates must apply online through the official TRB website.
- The application fee is generally required to be paid during the application process. The fee varies for general and reserved categories.
- Candidates should upload scanned copies of required documents, including their educational certificates, age proof, and photograph.
Elgibility Criteria
- LLB degree (3-year or 5-year course) from a recognized university.
- Age Relaxation : 21-35 years (with relaxations for reserved categories).
- Educational Qualification: A degree in law (LLB) from a recognized institution.
- Legal Practice Generally, no experience required for entry-level judicial posts; practice as an advocate may be required for senior positions.

Exam Structure
- Preliminary Exam : Serves as a screening test and is often objective in nature, containing multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
- Main Exam : A subjective, detailed written examination that focuses on in-depth legal knowledge.
- Interview/Viva Voce : This final stage assesses a candidate’s legal knowledge, reasoning ability, general awareness, communication skills, and overall suitability for the judicial role.
Selection Process

- Cut-off: Candidates need to meet the cut-off mark set by the respective state’s judicial service commission to qualify for the main exam.
- Interview/Viva Voce : Purpose: To assess the candidate’s personality, communication skills, legal acumen, and overall suitability for a judicial role.
Syllabus
- Law Subjects : Civil Law , Criminal Law , Constitutional Law .
- General Knowledge and Current Affairs: Important events, general science, and social/political awareness.
- Language: English language skills, including comprehension, essay writing, and legal drafting, as well as a regional language component for some states.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary: The salary varies by state, but on average
- Grade Pay (varies): ₹5,400 to ₹6,000.
- Total Salary: After including allowances, a Civil Judge or Magistrate can expect a total monthly salary in the range of ₹70,000 to ₹95,000.
