Bar Council Examinations
Purpose
- The AIBE is a mandatory examination for law graduates to obtain a Certificate of Practice and be eligible to practice as an advocate in courts across India. It ensures that a candidate has the basic knowledge and understanding of the law required for professional practice.
Application Process
- The Bar Council of India releases a notification for the AIBE exam online.
- Candidates can apply through the official AIBE website.
- Application forms are typically available a few months before the exam date.
- The application process involves online registration, filling out personal details, uploading documents, and paying the exam fee.
Elgibility Criteria
- Educational Qualification: You must have a law degree (LLB) from a recognized law school or university.
- Enrollment with State Bar Council: You must also be enrolled as an advocate with the State Bar Council.
- Completion of LLB: Candidates who have completed their LLB from a recognized university are eligible to appear for the exam. There is no age limit for taking the AIBE.

Exam Structure
- Preliminary Exam : Serves as a screening test and is often objective in nature, containing multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
- Main Exam : A subjective, detailed written examination that focuses on in-depth legal knowledge.
- Interview/Viva Voce : This final stage assesses a candidate’s legal knowledge, reasoning ability, general awareness, communication skills, and overall suitability for the judicial role.
Selection Process
- Preliminary Exam : Format: Objective, multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
- Cut-off: Candidates need to meet the cut-off mark set by the respective state’s judicial service commission to qualify for the main exam.
- Interview/Viva Voce : Purpose: To assess the candidate’s personality, communication skills, legal acumen, and overall suitability for a judicial role.
Syllabus
- Law Subjects : Civil Law , Criminal Law , Constitutional Law .
- General Knowledge and Current Affairs: Important events, general science, and social/political awareness.
- Language: English language skills, including comprehension, essay writing, and legal drafting, as well as a regional language component for some states.
Salary and Benefits
- Tier 1 Law Firms : Salary Range: ₹10-20 lakhs per annum (for freshers).
- Mid-sized Law Firms:Salary Range: ₹5-12 lakhs per annum.
- Small Law Firms/Chamber of a Senior Advocate: Salary Range: ₹2-5 lakhs per annum (or stipend/fee-sharing).
