State Judicial Service Exam

Purpose

  • The State Judicial Service Exam (also known as the Civil Judge Exam or PCS (J) – Provincial Civil Service (Judicial)) is a competitive examination in India for recruiting entry-level judges in the subordinate judiciary. It’s a great path for law graduates aiming to become Civil Judges or Judicial Magistrates.

Application Process

  • Candidates must apply online through the official TRB website.
  • The application fee is generally required to be paid during the application process. The fee varies for general and reserved categories.
  • Candidates should upload scanned copies of required documents, including their educational certificates, age proof, and photograph.

Elgibility Criteria

  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have an LL.B. degree (Bachelor of Laws) from a recognized university and be registered with their state’s Bar Council, although practicing law is not typically required.
  • Age Limit: Generally, candidates should be between 21 to 35 years, with age relaxations provided for candidates from reserved categories, as per each state’s guidelines

Exam Structure

  • Preliminary Exam : Serves as a screening test and is often objective in nature, containing multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
  • Main Exam : A subjective, detailed written examination that focuses on in-depth legal knowledge.
  • Interview/Viva Voce : This final stage assesses a candidate’s legal knowledge, reasoning ability, general awareness, communication skills, and overall suitability for the judicial role.

Salary and Benefits

  • Entry-Level Salary : The basic monthly salary for an entry-level civil judge typically ranges from ₹77,840 to ₹1,36,520 depending on the state.
  • Senior Civil Judge and District Judge roles come with substantial increments. Senior judges can earn ₹1,10,000 to ₹1,50,000 per month, while district judges may earn above ₹2,00,000 per month.
